Starting out ‐ What you need to know

Blackjack games are usually played with 8 decks of playing cards. At the start of each hand you will be required to place your bet and the dealer then deals a card for you and for himself, both face down, you are allowed to look at your card but the dealer may not turn his over. He will then deal another card for you and himself, this time face up for all to see.

Once everyone has their cards, the excitement begins and you'll need to calculate what your next move will be by adding the value of the cards. Card values are as follows:

  • An ACE is counted as either 1 or 11 (it's your choice)
  • FACE CARDS (ie. Jack, King, Queen) and 10's are counted as 10
  • OTHER cards are counted by their value

The object of the game is to get cards to the value of 21 or as close as possible because the person with 21 or the closest to it wins. Any player who is dealt an Ace and any card valued by 10 wins automatically.

And so the action begins...

Once you have determined what the value of the cards is you will need to make one of the following decisions and inform the dealer of this:

  • HIT: This means that you will ask for another card. You are allowed to "hit" as many times as necessary for you to reach 21 or as close to it as possible. Those who scored more than 21 during hitting lose immediately.
  • STAND: To say you'll stand means that you are satisfied with the value of your cards and do not require additional ones from the dealer.
  • DOUBLE DOWN: This means that you double your primary bet. After doing this you may only take one more card from the dealer.
  • SPLIT: Some games allow you to split cards but you can only do this once if the option is available. Splitting is permitted if a player has two of the same cards E.g. Two Tens ‐ he/she may then seperate them and play on two hands instead of one (the wagered amount is automatically doubled to cover the bet for each hand). • SURRENDER: If this option is available and you don't like your cards in the least then you may opt to "surrender" your hand and take back half of your initial bet.

Once you have made your plays, the dealer will take his/her turn. He/she will view the second card (which is facing downwards) and make a decision as to whether to hit or stand. In the basic blackjack game the dealer has to hit if the value of his cards is 16 or less and has to stand on all cards valued at 17 or higher.

After the player and the dealer have completed their hands, all cards are revealed and the one with the highest score wins.
